Dr. Larry Gorkin, (formerly Pfizer Pharmaceuticals) and I have just completed this updated pharma pricing and reimbursement analysis. This comprehensive industry review focuses exclusively on the differential costs (and reimbursement to physicians) of Avastin and Lucentis in the treatment of Age-related Macular Degeneration.

Given the (US) $1.1 billion allocated by US Congress in 1Q09 to investigate the effectiveness of different treatments for the same illness, this look into what really drives prescriptions is incredibly salient to industry opinion leaders, as well as health care policy and payer decision makers.

As a result of federal stimulus and legislation, National Institute of Health (NIH) researchers will conduct comparative efficacy studies of drugs, medical devices, surgical procedures, and other specific treatments.

Cost-effectiveness research accelerates in rancor. However,  prior to the stimulus bill legislation, a key comparative effectiveness study, sponsored by the National Eye Institute (part of NIH), evaluated Roche’s Avastin (bevacizumab) versus Roche’s Lucentis (ranibizumab) in the treatment of patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness among individuals over the age of 55 years.

In brief, Lucentis is approved to treat wet AMD. Avastin is not. However, Lucentis costs about $2,000 per injection, whereas Avastin costs about $50 per injection. That’s a 40 fold differential in pharmaceutical pricing.
